Inside the engine block are cylinders, perfectly round and smooth to allow pistons to move up and down with very little friction (of course, lubricated by oil). Unfortunately, if it cracks after their extended warranty expires, the car is pretty much toast, as it's not worth replacing a $3800 engine on a car that's worth maybe $5k.
