The lovers referred to are clearly not white, but Malcolm seems to want to believe the story refers to himself and Lyra.
Start by marking “The Secret Commonwealth (The Book of Dust, #2)” as Want to Read: The book will continue on from The Secret Commonwealth, taking place after the events of The Amber Spyglass.
We learn that Malcolm is in love with Lyra. Such a great metaphor to how we stop believing in magic when we get old- and how this skeptical point of view limits how we understand world and even ourselves. One is that, given Pullman's own avowed atheism, we might easily have taken him for just such a figure himself.
Also, the secret commonwealth is new to this trilogy, or, at least, it's Pullman expanding on what he did in His Dark Materials. Start by marking “Untitled (The Book of Dust, #3)” as Want to Read: I love the HDM series from when I was a child, and still love it as an adult when I re-read it about a year or so ago.
There's nothing like the pain of finishing a book with a cliffhanger…and needing to wait months (if not years) for the next book.
So Vol.3 in October 2021. No, the problem comes from the other aspect, which is that anything that looks like our world's rationalism, existing in Pullman's world, is not rationalism at all – it's insanity. In the meantime, she's been bickering with Pan, who is convinced that she's somehow had her imagination stolen away by two modish authors she's been reading.
One of the things which made Terry Pratchett's later work so invigorating was his willingness to go back, re-examine his own earlier conclusions on religion, see where nuance was wanting, and correct himself. After the first book, I wondered if Pullman was a pseudonym for a woman, as Lyra was such a fabulous female character.
Grown-up Lyra?? There's no reason for anyone to buy into this philosophy, and there's even less for her. I did muddle through and was greatly rewarded. Welcome back. Lyra herself has been to other realities and the Land of the Dead, met angels, the whole shebang – and not been treated as insane when she came back from it.
He's both a scholar and a secret agent. We’d love your help. I agree with everything you said.
How the heck can people rate it when it hasn't even come out yet??? We’d love your help.

The big picture isn’t as clear in this book as in the first trilogy.Yes, thank you!! Allie Watson October 2021. Very interesting.
October 2021. Plus, nothing of note happens in this book (and at least one very unnecessary thing happens), so, regardless of what Pullman does or doesn't do in the final book, I did not like this book, at all. I hated the attempted rape sc[ It broke my heart to see Lyra and Pan fight but the reasons are so vague and barely explained. 687 pages and Mr. Pullman still left me hanging at the top of the highest cliff ever. The first book in this series left me a cooler than the HDM series, but I still enjoyed the adventure even though in that one Lyra is just a baby. So Vol.3 in October 2021. There's actually nothing that happens in the first book that isn't told to Lyra at some point, which, again, renders the first book almost irrelevant [which is espoused by Lyra's old friend Farder Coram and other gyptians, and this secret commonwealth is found in stories and superstition and belief in what you can't see, or what you can only see if you believe in it. It had no purpose.
In this story we have skipped forward by 20 years so we're now beyond the ending of HDM and I loved getI finished this one on audiobook just now, and I think the narrator of this story did a brilliant job bringing everything to life. Dude is much older than her and why was he into her when she was still essentially a kid?
