It was a rental car so I wasn't familiar with it. i test drive a focus st 2016 before buying my touring, dealer told me in test drive that the turbo icon in the focus dash that read -10 +20lbs ( turbo boost) was the G-force when taking curves and accelerating , i was lmao inside of me .... i got the hell out of there. Yes you can. It's handy for towing and steep hills.Assuming you're talking about an automatic/standard, all it does is limit the highest gear it'll use. So I just bought my first Honda in 8 years (last 2 generations didn't impress me) and couldn't get a straight answer from the dealership on shifting. But if i'm going say 30mph and start going down a steep hill, could i shift into 2 or 1 at that point?I accidentally did that once on the road.
Sometimes I am in traffic and want to get around someone quickly so I shift from D to S. I notice the engine revs generally higher and Ive read S just spools up the turbo up quicker. Ill switch into S when passing and then switch back to D because the car seems to maintain the higher speed in D longer than it does in S. I have no idea if this will cause any problems later down the line, but this is the reason I lease cars.

If you hit the brake, you'd know it: I have done hundreds of experiments—some that started above 100 mph—in which I pushed both the accelerator and brake to the floor. you know how automatic cars get D and then D3, D2, and D1? It's useful for going up hills (car might get confused if you're going fast uphill, and shift to a high gear) or accelerating quickly when merging onto the highway from a slow on-ramp (low gear = higher revs = faster acceleration).From what i've understood from my research, the "3, 2, 1" in an automatic transmission just prevents the car from shifting to a higher gear than that.So if i set the transmission to "2" the car wont upshift into 3rd or 4th gear.This is apparently useful for when you are towing something/going up long inclines so the car doesn't overtax itself, or when in icy conditions, when you don't want the car going into high gear.I was never taught this, so i had no clue until i did some research.In most cars with a computer the setting is just a suggestion, what you would What i COULD NOT find, was information on whether it was safe to shift down into the other gears while the car is in motion.I just tried this out yesterday with my Jeep, holy shit at going down a steep hill with no brakes required!New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be castReference questions answered here. You can definitely switch from D to S while driving, just don't do it while pedal to the floor.
So put it in 2 and it'll only use 1st and 2nd, etc. If you slow down, it will shift down to second or first as necessary. Anyone have advice on here? You'll also find you can do it without pushing the button (if your shifter has one).This depends on the car - often you'll have a D3 which shifts between the lowest three gears, and sometimes the 2 and the 1 lock it in that gear (that is, 2 is always 2, it doesn't shift between 2 and 1).
