The traditional back-to-back reclining lounge seats are comfortable whether you're standing or sitting at the helm, spotting for a waterskier or sunbathing. Jet-powered boats use the same propulsion system used in personal watercrafts (PWCs) that mates an inboard engine to a jet pump. In other words, it's impossible to shift one engine into Forward and the other into Neutral or Reverse, the way you would when docking a conventional twin-screw. The helmsman's seat neatly adjusts, leaving enough room to stand comfortably during low-speed maneuvers. Jet boats have extremely quick acceleration and unmatched turning ability. The reason for this is that the effectiveness of the directional control of the ‘jet’ (the flow of water expelled by the jet that provides thrust) is more or less proportional to the speed.Jet boats aren’t too hot when travelling in reverse either; given the jet can only be directed aft, you’re reliant on the redirection of thrust as a result of lowering the deflector plate over the jet exhaust. The only areas in which the Sea Ray clearly excels are reduced wave slap against the fiberglass hull thanks to better sound deadening, fancier instrumentation - including a depthfinder - and a stainless steel destroyer-style wheel. This prop-free outboard is for shallow water boats. It is to the point that you can’t tell much difference in the noise level. Compared to the jet boats, the outboards' cockpits are huge, with a large open area suitable for fishing or ski equipment. Compared to the Sea-Doo, the Yamaha seems to have more engine vibration, and noticeably poorer directional stability at both low and high speeds. Both the Sea Ray and Bayliner hulls track and perform perfectly, punching through waves and wakes with a commendably dry ride. Whilst jet drives operate well at speed, when it comes to travelling slowly they aren’t great at all. Our perspective on this is that sucking a rope up will create issues with nearly any type of propulsion (including stern drives and inboards), so we don’t consider that to be a disadvantage exclusive to jet boats.
And thanks to heavily bolstered seats for the helmsman, first mate and rear passengers, you stay firmly in place during the most violent maneuvers. That may seem tame by motorcycle standards, but it's seriously quick for something that floats. For these reasons, we upgraded to an inboard MerCruiser ski boat. Again, don’t let this one slow you down if you are looking at jet boats. The main difference is in the type of noise.
