I do not remember if I was gathering information at that time. It is .43 Spanish as best as I can tell, as a shell casing fits perfectly with no movement. The culprit the financial " Panic of 1873" which didn't end until 1879. If you would like a shooter, plenty of .45-70 RB reproductions are on the market;prices not bad as well.
EdQuite possible you've seen the rifle. I have not done a chamber cast. I noted the words EM.L Nagant on the left frame and the familiar looking serial markings and prefix on the right frame which urged me to ask if I could look at the barrel and the other "discarded" parts. The gun dealer I purchased the rifle from got it at a gun show I believe in Oklahoma. On each of the barrel bands on the right hand side there is a small square stamped.

A very reasonable explanation for why a rifle made in in 1874 might have an 1879 Plaque.Pull off your stock and look on the front and see if it is the same serial number as the rest. Also the butt plate should be numbered the same. We know of several low 3000 rifles with 1874 patent dates. The easiest was to identify a Number 5 action without removing and measuring the barrel shank, is to look for the receiver radial relief cuts on either side of front of the breechblock. There is very little stamped on the rifle anywhere. As I remember, it was a nice rifle.
