I believe that Blue Bird's metal/chrome (whatever it is) handle has a "lock" at the bottom and you have to push it down also. and I LOVE IT!! With IC now making that great "liner door opener" in which the driver does not have to make that horrible swing motion...they just have to pull back towards them...manual doors have never been better. With the Blue Bird you use your thumb and push the black rubber grip up and open the door, not hard to do, but the way Thomas made them in the 80's was they didn't have a lever to push down, and you didn't have to pull up on anything on the handle. I didn't think the Intl FE was available with a manual door either, but I saw an 01 recently that had it. That door was so heavy—and the noise it made was almost as painful to hear as the loud stressed-metal creaks that came with trying to open the lift door. I've seen this happen in a few Fords with the Hydro system. When I drive for a school, a manual door would probably not be a good selection because after a while your arm might get tired of opening it, when parked on a hill, with a jacknife style door, it gets heavy. Imagine doing that with a heavy door opener, like a Wayne. The controller in my bus is a small lever that gives you infinite control of the door. The door manual door control we have on the 98 and 99 models have a lever you push down to release the handle, I am wondering if the 01 will be the same? It didn't have a lever to push down, and you didn't have to pull up on the handle like on Blue Birds.

There wasn't to much tension, it was always easy to open, but there was enough tension so that you didn't have to worry about it poping open. The only problem about this is sometimes your Ford will have it's hydro brake switch released, but the driver isn't able to keep the bus from movin if on a hill even with the brake pedal to the floor, it takes sometimes a few seconds for the actual braking system to kick in before you can go anywere. I would much rather have a manual door, hands down. It has an automatic door opener that has never worked correctly and is almost impossible to get fixed here. Its a lot easier to close, and open. I just went from a 1984 Thomas International with a manual door to a 2002 Thomas Freightliner with an air door.

Even with all of those crossings and having to set my MANUAL park brake lever and open my MANUAL door I wouldn't ask for anything else. We have one trip bus with an air door, and I have to be careful with it in that it opens very slowly and closes quickly and with a lot of force, it seems. It will be a Thomas.

Most of the pictures I've seen of other air door controls are just two or three position switches.

Also, make it stand out so when we teach the klids Emergency Evacuation drills that the release is noticeable and stands out. Electric the bus has 2 be running 4 them to function properly. Something i noticed is in extreme cold temps.

I have seem one of the 2005 IC's and the control switch is on the steering wheel and also your eight ways.

Most all of our buses have manual doors with the exception to the 95 Thomas Buses, and the newer buses we got last year.
