This should be shown to teens in school and discussed properly. I really wasn't prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that this film was. Well worth a watch certainly. The plot is set during the Salvadoran Civil War, and is based on writer Óscar Torres's childhood. Chava survives, left his home and country to go to the United States. It occurred to me two days later why this film made me sick.= Is it really true that our American government with our tax dollars trained the soldiers to murder these little boys? Should this be considered a crime against humanity? Perfect. Chava's uncle warns the children that the government troops are coming for them and they manage to hide but they can't hide forever. A road movie about teenage immigrants and their journey to the U.S. The rest of the cast is also routinely superb, including Spaniard Daniel Giménez Cacho as the priest and Jesus Ochoa (uncredited on IMDb) as the bus driver. The gorgeous Leonor "Cleopatra" Varela also shows she is much more than a pretty face, putting in a very moving performance as Chava's mother.

I just saw this film at the Seattle International Film Festival premiere and I enjoyed it immensely.
This DVD is in a Spanish dialect with English subtitles - and I liked this because it was part of that culture. Voces Inocentes was filmed in Jalapa, Mexico and produced by the Mexican company Altavista Films (Amorres Perros, Todo el Poder, Nicotina).
When the bullets started to fly,I ducked. The name Saddam Hussein came to mind. Boy Soldiers are a real societal problem and do exist; indeed they are innocent voices conscripted into tragic situations of war. First of all, this is a must-watch for all especially Americans. A moving film based on true events about the harsh reality of the civil war in El Savador in the 1980s, child soldiers and loss of a child's innocence.
