Father Pyrlig pleads with him to not go through with this, but he continues forward.

Odda explains that he lied to his men and told them that they were there to fight on Alfred’s orders. Mildrith retorts that she has purpose and her child is with God. Before long, Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric, and Osferth arrive with Lady Æthelflæd. Alfred makes his presence known. Odda reveals that she’s safe at his home, with his wife. Nevertheless, Alfred wants Uhtred to return to Coccham.

However, Alfred will not forgive him. Alfred offers Uhtred a way to become Ealdormen through marriage, but Uhtred has no need for a wife. Leofric, Uhtred, and Mildrith arrive in Winchester to inform the council that the Danes are crossing through Wessex.

Odda’s injury and appetite for wine has robbed them both of his worth.

Uhtred ensures that Mildrith is given her price. Alfred states that the metal will be paid in full.

Odda explains that he’s done what he had to for Wessex. He reminds Alfred that he is a king before he is a father. He informs them that while London has been reclaimed, the brothers abducted Æthelflæd. Realizing that tyrant he has become and the treason he has committed, Odda kills Young Odda.

Odda accuses Æthelred of putting all kingdoms at risk, making him the fool he always believed him to be. Alfred is in agreement with Uhtred and decides they will indeed march.

Uhtred and Æthelred argue over the best method of attack. Beocca retorts that God will never allow that to happen and that they will triumph. All he needs is Odda’s word that they’ll attack once the fires start. They watch as the ships go up in flames. Uhtred orders Osferth to stay behind and watch after Odda.

Those dilemmas are all but easy to him, as he remains a man of honor and faithful friend at heart (for instance, having given his word to Some of his most radical stances and actions may easily be interpreted as cold-hearted or insensitive, though they are above all motivated by his extreme devotion to Wessex, and his selfless pragmatism. Alfred tells Odda that he would like to re-propose the prospect of marriage to Uhtred.

Alfred makes Uhtred another proposition.

A bag is placed over Æthelwold’s head, and he is taken to a barn by Odda and Odda, Alfred, and Uhtred discuss the possibility of Uhtred joining the council and becoming an Ealdormen.
